An interesting application field for Wireless Mesh Technology comes from the integration with Power Line Communication (PLC) systems for the control of urban lighting system.
It is indeed possible to leverage the features of a wireless mesh network to provide urban coverage for the provision of municipal info services, further providing Internet connectivity to citizenship and law enforcement institutions. The network infrastructure features a wireless access segment to provide connectivity to standard WiFi equipment, and a backbone which can easily exploit hybrid PLC/Wireless links city-wide. The new hybrid network infrastructure can overcome the limitation of the complex urban environments, opportunistically exploiting the synergy of the two communication technologies, thus avoiding to deploy one PLC transceiver for each wireless device. In such scenario, MobiMESH wireless network can also operate as a connectivity back-up for the control of the entire system, or as a dedicated technology for certain broadband applications (VoIP, mobility, etc.).
